Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Nothwanger ("Dr. N") has been with Merrifield Animal Hospital since 1987. She was born in Argentina, where she learned to ride horses on her maternal grandfather's cattle ranch, and grew up in Maryland. She credits her father and grandfather (both surgeons) with giving her an interest in medicine. Before earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and attending veterinary college, she lived in England and worked as a cook and au pair. A 1985 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, she initially practiced in Dundalk, Maryland for two years before moving to Virginia. Since 1985, Dr. Nothwanger has been accredited by the USDA, which permits her to sign international health certificates for animals being shipped overseas. Her professional interests include behavior and surgery, and she is a long-time member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA), Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (NVVMA), and the District of Columbia Academy of Veterinary Medicine (DCAVM)
