Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Schmidt is a 2003 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. Since earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, he has been practicing veterinary medicine in his home state of Florida until joining the Champion Wood Animal Hospital in June 2014. Born in Hollywood, FL, Matt has lived a number of other places including Texas and Illinois.In 2012, Dr. Schmidt earned board certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP), specializing in canine and feline practice. Fewer than 450 veterinarians in the world have attained this designation, with less than 25 in the state of Texas. ABVP certification is a demanding three-year process of additional studies and examinations to prove superior knowledge and expertise in the clinical practice of veterinary medicine.Besides being certified in canine and feline practice, Dr. Schmidt has clinical experience and interest in reptiles and small mammals such as ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs. Dr. Schmidt enjoys all aspects of veterinary practice, but has special interests and training in clinical pathology, oncology, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, and diagnostic imaging.Dr. Schmidt is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Florida Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and Montgomery County Veterinary Medical Association. On several occasions, Dr. Schmidt has been invited by the Harbour Branch Oceanographic Institute to take part in health assessment research of bottlenose dolphin in the Indian River Lagoon in Florida. Dr. Schmidt has also been honored with the HillÍs Buddy Award for Excellence in Veterinary Nutrition and the F. P. Jaggi Veterinary Public Health Award.When not practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Schmidt can usually be found spending time with his beautiful wife and their four children. They enjoy travelling, hiking, and camping together. Adding to their full house are three dogs and, occasionally, a rescued tortoise or two. Dr. Schmidt is also an avid golfer and sports fan and may be often heard cheering for his dear Texas A&M Aggies.
