Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Jessica Shanne Rooker grew up on a rural dairy farm, where she learned "everything from helping my father milk cows and feeding the calves replacement milk to learning how to drive a tractor and not run through the fence!" The farm was in Manson, North Carolina, and Dr. Rooker was surrounded by "indoor cats, outdoor herding dogs, green snakes and hermit crabs." It was in this environment that she first learned of her love for animals. She has been with us since April of 2012. Dr. Rooker attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where she majored in Biology and Animal Science. She graduated in 2002 as class valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude, and was a member of the women's basketball team and elected as the President of the Biology club. She also volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club. Dr. Rooker was then accepted at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University, where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She is a member of the Radiology Club, the Ruminant Club and the American Veterinary Medical Association. She has been a guest lecturer for dog handlers at the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Today, she has a special professional interest in internal medicine (ultrasound), dentistry and dermatology. "No day is ever the same in veterinary medicine," Dr. Rooker said on why she enjoys her job so much. "And of course helping our furry friends and their owners!" Dr. Rooker shares her home with two cats, Olive Oil and Pearl, and a Jack Russell named Jellybean. She's an outdoor enthusiast, and enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, snowboarding - you name it! On a rainy day, Dr. Rooker will watch a movie or bake some sweet desserts.
