Veterinarian Overview
A Massachusetts native, Dr. Howes's animal-loving family bred Himalayan cats, which nurtured a strong interest in and compassion for living creatures around him. While he worked at an animal store as a teenager, he began what became a lifelong hobby of raising and breeding reptiles. Dr. Howes's love affair with science resulted in a bachelor's degree from Northeastern University with a degree in biology, which he turned into a career in molecular biology studying Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Massachusetts. Being a people person and still passionate about animals, Dr. Howes realized that, after many years of working in laboratories, such a solitary work environment wasn't going to make him happy. So he moved halfway across the country to pursue his lifelong dream of animal medicine and enrolled in the highly selective veterinary program at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hedges knew he found something special in Dr. Howes, and he joined the BVH family the day after his graduation when he found himself performing emergency surgery on his own dog! Finally doing what he always felt he was meant to do (his words!), Dr. Howes enjoys working with a variety of small animal and exotic pets and still has a strong interest in reptiles as well as the fields of ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry. When he is not at work, Dr. Howes can be found hanging out with his wife, his son, and their extended animal family that includes two overly affectionate rescued pit bulls, three lazy cats, fish and two snakes. He also enjoys hiking, camping, fly fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and just about anything that gets him outdoors.
