Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Kaltsas is the senior staff veterinarian at Stoneledge Animal Hospital in Westbrook and, since 2006, the co-owner of the practice with his wife Nicole. Dr. Kaltsas's veterinary career, in a sense, began when he was just 15 years old and living in Milford, NH. "Our family dog had puppies and one came out of the amniotic sac not breathing. I used a bulbous syringe, removed the fluid and puffed air into its lungs and the puppy revived," Dr. Kaltsas remembered. "After that experience, I knew what I wanted to do." Dr. Kaltsas received his bachelor's degree in animal and dairy science from Auburn University in 1994. He was the recipient of the J.P. Cunningham Scholarship, which paid for one year of undergraduate studies, and he was also a member of the Gamma Sigma Delta National Honor Society. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1998 where he was a member of the Phi-Zeta National Honor Society for Veterinarians. He was a co-founder of Omega Tau Sigma, a professional fraternity. The sheer variety of cases that Dr. Kaltsas sees every day continues to motivate him. "The pets and the interesting people you meet are inspiring," Dr. Kaltsas said. "If you love what you do you never work a day in your life." He was nominated as one of the top 1000 veterinarians in the country in 2008. Dr. Kaltsas and Nicole have three children and share their home with two rescue dogs, Deja and Katie. He spends his spare time with his family, kayaking, camping, visiting historic sites and fishing.
