Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Carol Ross Lewis founded Healing Hands Animal Hospital to realize her vision of combining the best of conventional veterinary medicine with complementary therapies to enhance the health and well-being of pets on the lower Eastern Shore. Dr. Lewis was destined to be a veterinarian. Growing up on a farm in GarrettCounty taught her about hard work and compassion for animals from a very early age. She learned how to "read" their behavior and to draw conclusions about health and nutrition as a result. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree from West VirginiaUniversity in 1986, Carol was selected for a year-long internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, a high-volume, cutting edge research and teaching hospital in New York City. It was there that the Carol was encouraged to continue her studies, and she went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. Dr. Lewis practiced at DelmarvaAnimalHospital in Bishopville, MD, initially under the tutelage of Cornell Veterinarian Dr. Gail Ordun. Dr. Lewis spent ten years at Delmarva, where she was promoted to Medical Director, before moving on to Bayside Animal Hospital in Cambridge and working in relief for several other animal hospitals before opening Healing Hands in 2005. Dr. Lewis' lifelong dedication to animal health led her to pursue learning beyond conventional veterinary medicine. She is a 2003 graduate of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, and she followed that with intensive studies in Advanced Acupuncture, Tui-na, Food Therapy and Chinese Herbology at the Chi Institute under the direction of Dr. Huisheng Xie. Believing that the best veterinary care is achieved by the integration of Eastern and Western techniques, Dr. Lewis now regularly incorporates these modalities into her practice to correct imbalances that result in illness or injury. In her rare spare time, Dr. Lewis can be found volunteering her services at The Humane Society in WorcesterCounty, and as a Founding Trustee, Vice President of the Board of Directors and volunteer surgeon for Snip/Tuck, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing feral cat populations on Delmarva. Carol resides in Cambridge with her husband David, cats and two dogs.
