Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Randy W. Thayer was born and raised in Bunkie, Louisiana. He completed his pre-veterinary undergraduate work at LSU and received his DVM in 1967 from Oklahoma State University. In 1968 he founded Highland Road Animal Hospital and practiced there for 36 years until 2004. In his veterinary career, Dr. Thayer served as president of the LVMA from 1977-1978, served on the Board of Examiners from 1982-1986 and received the prestigious DVM of the Year award in 1984. In 2004, Dr. Thayer retired and sold Highland Road Animal Hospital. Retirement kept him busy as he received his Broker License and developed a small subdivision in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, along with a commercial office park (Interline Office Park) in Baton Rouge. After six years of retirement, Dr. Thayer realized how much he missed his work with animals and reactivated his license in 2010. Sherwood South Animal Hospital welcomed Dr. Thayer in January 2011. His special interests include: dermatology, ophthalmology, endocrinology and internal medicine. He resides in Baton Rouge with his wife, Susan Johnson Thayer, and Codi, a seven-year-old Rat Terrier. Dr. Thayer and Susan have three daughters and sons-in-law and are enjoying being grandparents to their eight grandchildren.
