Veterinarian Overview
Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in his elementary years. His summers were filled with working in Cameron, LA with cattle. His interest in becoming a veterinarian came at an early age. After graduating from University High School, Dr. Hackett completed his pre-vet with a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University. With no vet schools in Louisiana at the time, Dr. Hackett was accepted to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. White at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Hackett married Edith Smith from Baton Rouge. In 1967, Dr. Hackett received his DVM from Oklahoma State University and was the recipient of the Upjohn Award for proficiency in Veterinary Clinical Medicine.After receiving his degree, Dr. Hackett spent the next two years in the United States Air Force, stationed in Blytheville, Arkansas. Once he received his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Hackett moved back to Louisiana. He opened Animal Health Clinic in 1972 and has practiced veterinary medicine for the past 42 years. Dr. Hackett is a current member of the Alpha Psi Veterinary Fraternity, past president of the Baton Rouge Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Academy of Veterinary Practice, and the American Animal Hospital Association. He was also a previous member of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society.In 2002, Petz Plaza was established. Petz Plaza is located at 4763 Perkins Rd, which is adjacent to the Animal Health Clinic. The facility was the first of its kind in the Baton Rouge area to provide boarding, grooming, and day care; all under supervision of a veterinarian. The success of that project warranted a second Petz Plaza location which was established in 2010, located at 8380 Jefferson Hwy. Both of these locations are managed by Dr. Hackett, his son, Michael Hackett and MichaelÂ’s wife, JT Hackett. In 2012, a unique concept of pet transportation through a safe and convenient service was created; Petz Plaza Pet Taxi provides medication, food, pet pick-up and return services in and around the Baton Rouge area.Dr. HackettÂ’s special interests include veterinary dentistry, internal medicine, endoscopy, ultrasound, and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Hackett enjoys cycling, fly-fishing, golfing and spending time with his five grandchildren. He is an active member of First United Methodist Church.
