Veterinarian Overview
Now retired, co-founder MARK D. MARKS, DVM grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School. He then attended the University of Oklahoma receiving an education degree to teach chemistry and physics. After spending 6 years on active duty in the Field Artillery with the U. S. Army, Dr. Marks attended Oklahoma State University where he earned his degree in Veterinary Medicine.Dr. Marks first practiced in Monett, MO primarily as a large animal veterinarian working with dairies and cow/calf operations. Interspersed with cattle, he honed his skills with dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep, and goats. In 1989, Dr. Marks returned to Lawrence, KS, founded, and opened Marks Veterinary Hospital on South Iowa Street. In 1996, MVH was moved to Wakarusa Drive. In 2002, the combined practices of Marks Veterinary Hospital and Free State Veterinary Hospital formed Wakarusa Veterinary Hospital in its present location.Dr. Marks enjoys practicing medicine starting with the new puppy or kitten's introduction to the home. He says, "I want to be able to make a difference in people's lives through their pets. I measure my success by being there for the very first visit until the final goodbye. As sad as that may seem, joy is restored when the same owners show up with the new pet. The greatest measure is when the children, as young adults, present their first pet."Upon graduation from the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Marks began a relationship with the U. S. Army and the Reserves spanning 29 ½ years. He answered his nation's call to duty for OPERATION DESERT STORM for 6 months and again nearly a year for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Dr. Marks achieved the rank of Colonel and served with the 3rd Medical Command in a Brigadier General's position as the Chief Veterinary Officer for OIF. Dr. Marks served on the Board of Directors for the Lawrence/Douglas County Health Department for 6 years, Quail Unlimited for 20 years, and other leadership/advisory positions throughout the city.Dr. Marks is married, has 2 daughters and 2 grandsons.
