Veterinarian Overview
From an early age Dr. Nancy Sorensen seemed destined to become a veterinarian. "I would bring home animals that were sick and injured and try to nurse them back to health," she says, adding that most of the animals were never domesticated. But what sealed her fate was a visit to her family's veterinarian, who allowed her to listen to the family dog's heartbeat through his stethoscope. "I think that is what decided it for me," she says.As a child Dr. Sorensen spent time in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, before settling in Florida where she attended Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Florida. She earned her bachelor's degree in microbiology and animal science from the University of Florida and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 1993. While attending the University of Florida, Dr. Sorensen was an active member of the student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Animal Welfare Organization. She is currently a member of the American Veterinary Association, the Georgia Veterinary Association, and the Cobb County Veterinary Association. Her professional interests include dermatology and preventive medicine.Dr. Sorensen joined Lassiter Animal Hospital in 1996 and says that the most rewarding part of her job is "helping to develop the lifelong bond between a healthy pet and their family." She also enjoys taking her dog, Bronte, to local schools to discuss animal care and the veterinary profession. Dr. Sorensen lives with her husband Daniel, son Josh, daughter Sarah, dogs Bronte and Daisy, and cat Ty. In her free time she enjoys reading, baking, the beach, and rooting for the Florida Gators.
