Veterinarian Overview
I am the founder of Oasis Animal Clinic. I am a native of Arizona, growing up in Prescott. I grew up on a ranch and spent many hours as a kid riding horses and doing chores. I realized at a young age that animals serve many purposes and play a big role in our lives. I decided to become a veterinarian expecting to move back to a small town and join a mixed animal practice (large and small animals). While attending Arizona State University, I began working in some local veterinary clinics and discovered a fascination with small animal medicine and surgery. I was drawn to the client-pet bond and the awesome opportunity veterinarians have to affect the quality of life of pets and their owners. I knew then that this was the area of veterinary medicine that I wanted to pursue. I attended Washington State University graduating in 1982. Returning to Arizona, I opened Oasis Animal Clinic in December, 1982. In 1991, we moved from our original location on Dobson and Elliot Roads to the Wal-Mart PetSmart center in the corner of Alma School and Warner Roads. The practice grew during the twenty years we were located there. Eventually, we outgrew the 2,500 sq. ft. facility and began looking of a new place to call home. In October, 2011 we closed our doors at the old location leaving a million memories behind. We are now in our new facility on the Southeast corner or Ray and McQueen Roads. We are thrilled to be in a 5,200 square foot facility with all of the convenience and space to offer state of the art care. My professional interests include advanced training in pain management and best practice anesthetic protocols. For six years between 2006 and 2012, I had the opportunity to visit local veterinary hospitals teaching about modern methods of safe anesthesia and recovery with the Zoetis Animal Health DALE program. I have learned from each practice that I have visited. We also discuss improved techniques and recent advances in pain management. Watching this practice grow and develop is really amazing. I am very grateful to have such an awesome team of doctors and staff to provide care to so many patients and their owners. We have come a long way in the past 30 years! On the personal side, I am married to Marilyn Richardson Tenney and together we have 5 sons. Marilyn is a Licensed Social Worker specializing in Marriage, Family and Addiction. We live in Gilbert, where we have Yorkshire Terrier named Riley and a terrier mix named Pancho Villa. We recently lost our 17 year old cat, Don Juan and our 16 year old Jack Russell, Jamie. All of my family love pets. From time to time, some of you have met our kids working around the clinic. Currently, Brandon working for a local medical transport company and studying business. The next oldest is Trevor. He graduated from ASU and is nearly finished with his veterinary training at Texas A&Ms College of Veterinary Medicine where he will graduate in the Spring of 2016. Trevor was selected to become a member of the United States Army Veterinary Corp where he will serve for at least the first four years after graduation in 2016. Troy is married (Maize) and he is the father of our youngest grandchild, Ira. He is enrolled in medical school (human not veterinary) at MidWestern University in Glendale Arizona. Gary is the second oldest of our sons and is a PhD. Psychologist, working at Southwest Behavioral Health. He recently re-located his family to Payson, AZ where he is the director of clinical services. He is married to Angela Tenney of Tempe and they have a son, Dillon and a daughter, Audrey. Our oldest son, Rhett is married to Sandee Tenney and they are living in Eagar, AZ where both he and Sandee are teachers in the Round Valley Public Schools. They have 2 daughters, Josie and Sophie, and a son, Sam. It is true about grand-kids being so great. (As the bumper sticker says, If I had known that Grand-kids were so fun, I would have had them first!) My interests and hobbies include scuba diving, playing racquetball, video editing and computers. Dont ask to see any of my underwater videos (or here Red Sea 2014) unless you have some time on your hands. I also enjoy reading (especially history) and volunteering time for our church and other organizations. All of our family members are certified scuba divers and we love to travel and dive as a family. We have been able to see many beautiful areas and create vivid memories thanks to this sport. Thank you for your loyalty and support of Oasis Animal Hospital. We are humbled to be able to care for your pets. I recently wrote an article about the joys of veterinary medicine from my perspective.
