Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Tanya Higgins was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. She attended the University of Georgia, where she received her B. Sc. (Ag) in Animal Health/Poultry Science. She obtained her DVM from the Atlantic Veterinary College, at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Upon graduation, she immediately plunged into the exciting world of small animal emergency medicine for three years. Then Dr. Higgins headed into general, family veterinary practice but with a twist. This twist was crossing over, as one of her mentors constantly teases her, to the other-side, alternative medicine, specializing in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Higgins received her certification in veterinary acupuncture under the instruction of Dr. Huisheng Xie at the Chi Institute in Reddick, FL. Dr. Xie is one of the most prominent and world-renown veterinary acupuncturists. http://www.tcvm.com. In 2008, she furthered her TCVM studies and became certified in Traditional Chinese Herbs, Tui-na (Spinal Manipulation) and Chinese Food Therapy. Recently, in 2015, she became one of the few applicants accepted in the Masters Program in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. She is planning on getting her certification in Equine Acupuncture. Dr. Higgins has been a member of the VMAT-3 (Veterinary Medical Assistance Team) and NVRT-3, National Veterinary Response teams since 2005 and was deployed on many missions, most notable Hurricane Katrina where she went to Mississippi and had the most surreal and rewarding experience. In 2012, John Moss-Solomon and Dr. Higgins acquired Davie Creek Animal Hospital, a truly integrative approach to veterinary medicine. In September 2015, Dr. Higgins joined Equine Veterinarians both at Calder and Gulfstream Racetracks, working with thoroughbred racehorses part-time, practicing Integrative Medicine. This is something she hopes will continue and eventually become certified in Equine Acupuncture. John and Dr. Higgins proudly welcomed their son Luke in February 2015, he is the latest addition to their growing family along with their six dogs. They hope to expand their family with more dogs, cats and horses in the near future!
