Veterinarian Overview
Dr. James Prueter, seeing the need for a specialty-based pet care facility, opened The Veterinary Referral Clinic in 1981. The clinic was the first multi-specialty veterinary practice in Ohio. There are now nine specialty clinics in the state of Ohio. In 2004, driven by his ongoing passion for veterinary medicine, he purchased Shaker Animal Clinic, a full service veterinary practice that has served this community since 1943. Today, with over 30 years of experience as an Internal Medicine Specialist, he continues to care for his patients and their owners. Dr. Prueter is an activist and supporter of education, animal welfare and specialty practice collaborations. In 1981 he and Dr. Charles Parshall started the "Specialists in Practice of Ohio" forum at the Annual Ohio Veterinary Medical Conference to promote practicing specialty medicine in Ohio. In 1983 Dr. Prueter and Dr. Ted Belhorn - also a board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist - began "Specialists in Practice" within the ACVIM Forum. In 2002 Dr. Prueter, along with Marshfield Laboratories and Iam's Company, established the "1st Annual Veterinary Specialists in Practice Forum for Small Animal Practitioners and Practice Managers Seminar." Dr. Prueter shares his passion for education and animal welfare with the community through his involvement with Safety for Animals and Families in Emergency (SAFE). This non-profit group, which Dr. Prueter co-established in 2002, benefits abused spouses by providing foster care for their beloved pets while they, the pet parents, are transitioning from an abusive relationship to a healthy, safe environment. Shaker Animal Clinic also participates in a community assistance effort by supporting the AVC Fund. Through local donations, the AVC Fund assists the clinic's financially strained pet owners with providing medical care they may not otherwise be able to afford.
