Blog Post: What is cat dander? | Pet Medicus

Friday, March 17, 2023

Cat dander refers to tiny, often microscopic flecks of dead skin that cats shed regularly. These skin cells contain a protein that can cause an allergic reaction in some people, similar to the way that pollen or dust can cause an allergic reaction.

Dander can be found throughout a cat's coat and can become airborne, settling on surfaces in the home and causing allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

People with cat allergies may be able to reduce their symptoms by limiting their exposure to cat dander. This may include regularly washing a cat to remove excess dander, using an air purifier to reduce airborne allergens, and taking antihistamines or other medications to manage allergic symptoms. In some cases, people with severe allergies may need to avoid contact with cats altogether.
