Dr. Culwell grew up in Ossining, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1998 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 2003. She completed a 1 year small animal medicine and surgery internship at Oklahoma State University in 2004. Her cardiology training was accomplished at The Ohio State University, under the mentorship of Dr. John Bonagura and Dr. Karsten Schober. In December 2007, she completed her 3 year residency and simultaneously earned a Master of Science degree. The topic of her research was evaluation of left ventricular systolic function in canine mitral valvular endocardiosis using 2D strain imaging. She was a Clinical Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences prior to joining VMS full-time.
