Veterinarian Overview

William R. Fenner, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Neurology), is a board-certified Veterinary Neurologist at MedVet Columbus as well as the Neurology Specialty Leader for MedVet. He has been part of the medical team since 2004. Dr. Fenner attended Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Following his graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Fenner completed a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery, as well as a two-year residency in small animal medicine and neurology at the Animal Medical Center in New York.Since becoming a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology), Dr. Fenner has become a leader and well-known figure in veterinary neurology. Dr. Fenner taught at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and was a guest faculty member at Michigan State University and Purdue University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. He was awarded the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award as well as The Animal Medical Center Distinguished Alumnus Award.Dr. Fenner has the perspective of both an academic and private practice career. Raised in his father’s private, general practice, he gained an early understanding of the importance of listening to each client. Thirty years in teaching and research development showed him the importance of always looking to the future.Dr. Fenner’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He’s also the principle editor and a contributor for all three editions of “Quick Reference to Veterinary Practice.” He is also an active advocate of continued education for veterinary professionals and has lectured on small animal neurology topics both nationally and internationally. He has been the principal investigator of several clinical studies focused on the treatment of epilepsy and the response of the nervous system to inflammation (encephalitis).Dr. Fenner maintains an interest in all aspects of small animal neurology with particular interest in the management of canine seizures. In addition to his responsibilities at MedVet, Dr. Fenner is currently the Professional Liaison for the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and serves as the ACVIM’s representative on the American Board of Veterinary Specialties.
